responding to the struggle to pray << previous page

teens prayIf we're honest, we'd each admit that developing and maintaining a deep and vibrant prayer life can be a struggle. That struggle shouldn't be a surprise. Most things that are worthwhile and valuable don't come easily. In addition, a great percentage of us find our lives full of roadblocks standing in the way of building intimacy with Christ.

Prayer Experience
Many of us grew up in homes and churches that lacked meaningful prayer. Our education and other training likely took place in prayerless environments even when it occurred in religious institutions. We work and serve in a success-oriented world that does not typically welcome or affirm prayer. Prayer may even be scoffed. And then there's the very sobering reality that the last thing our enemy, the devil, would want for us is a close relationship with God. Is it any wonder we can feel defeated in our prayer lives and even be confused about what prayer is all about?

Prayer that Leads to Trust
God is not surprised by these circumstances and he doesn't stand ready to constantly point out our lackluster prayer lives. He does, however, long for us to know the depth, the freedom and the peace that come from growing to trust and know him deeply. Like Daniel, in the face of great peril, we can stand boldly in prayer even when the circumstances tempt us otherwise. (See Daniel 6.) In the same way as this man of integrity and faith did, we too can come out on the other side of those difficult circumstances knowing the provision and character of God even more. There's no greater lesson than experience.

Prayer with Others
Personal prayer is vital, but Scripture also makes it clear that there is immense power in praying together with others. Don't allow the enemy to lead you to miss out on that power. Are you concerned about sharing your heart and personal circumstances in group prayer? Then ask God for a trusted group of godly believers to join you. Are you intimidated by praying aloud with others? This fear actually comes from the flesh, not the Lord. Remember, he is our only real audience in prayer. Our words and eloquence do not impress him and we should not be concerned about trying to impress others or gain their affirmation with our prayers. Our hearts are what God is most interested in hearing and transforming. Believing this truth diminishes our fears and self-consciousness.

Prayer is for Everyone
At New Hope Church, and as individuals, let's commit to understanding the privilege and opportunities that are missed when we forego meeting together for prayer. The world and even many misinformed believers may lead you to think prayer is just for a "certain type of Christian"–one with the "gift" for prayer. That couldn't be further from the truth and that line of thinking explains the powerlessness so many experience in their lives. The truth is that a life full of prayer is simply a sign of recognition of your utter dependence upon God.
